Condition 8547 – 6 months work limitation for working holiday visa makers

What is the condition 8547?

Condition 8547 is imposed on Working Holiday visa holders, limiting the period they can work for the same employer to six months.

Working for the same employer for more than six months

To extend this period and continue working despite condition 8547, you must request permission from the Department.

Once the request is made, the individual can continue working for the same employer until a positive outcome is obtained.

When a positive outcome is received, you can continue working in the same company until the visa expires. If the permission is denied, it is no longer possible to continue working for the same employer.

However, despite this condition, it is not necessary to request permission when working in “critical sectors.”

Let’s see when it is NOT NECESSARY to request permission:

  • Work in plant cultivation and animal husbandry anywhere in Australia.
  • Work in “critical sectors” across Australia, including agriculture, food processing, healthcare, aged care, disability services, childcare, tourism, and hospitality.
  • Work in certain sectors in NORTHERN AUSTRALIA, such as fishing, pearling, forestry, construction, and mining.
  • Work in areas affected by natural disasters anywhere in the country.

Some examples:

  • If you work as a waiter, chef, or restaurant manager anywhere in Australia, you can continue working for the same employer after six months without needing to request permission from the Department.
  • If you work as a nurse, kindergarten teacher, or aged care assistant anywhere in Australia, you can continue working for the same employer after six months without needing to request permission from the Department.
  • If you work as an office administrator in Sydney, you MUST REQUEST permission from the Department to work beyond six months for the same employer.
  • If you work on a pearl farm in Kimberly, you can continue working for the same employer after six months without needing to request permission from the Department.
  • If you work as a choreographer in Melbourne, you MUST REQUEST permission from the Department to work beyond six months for the same employer.
